Christmas on Crete

Kalá Christoúyenna

Just like here, people in Greece also celebrate Christmas. In Greek, Christmas is called Christoúyenna, which means 'birth of Christ'. It was a long tradition that boats were decorated around Christmas time, but nowadays most Greeks have a beautifully decorated Christmas tree at home. The Greeks go to church early on December 25. After the mass, people wish each other Kalá Christoúyenna (Good Christmas) and Chrónia pollá (many years). Then people go home with family and friends and the Christmas specialties are served; stuffed turkey, Chirino skordato, kourabiedes and melomakarona. On Christmas Day in Greece, not only is Christmas celebrated, but it is also the name day of everyone called Christos or Christina.
